Hi Friends~

I've been gone awhile again...I thought when one gets older, life slows down a bit? Well, I'm wondering what 60 will be like! Heck, I'm going so fast now I can barely get these chubby little legs to keep up! Here's what's going on....

On August 6th my mom moved from Dallas to Marshalltown Iowa to live with my husband and I. Wait wait there's more....

Our home had 3 bedrooms upstairs and a great big empty square downstairs, the basement. A wall ran across the house downstairs to hold the darn thing up, but that was it. My husband and I have been building walls, sheetrocking, and mudding. We put a bathroom in, and of course a ginormous bedroom/sitting room. Gosh, I never knew how many details there are to putting something like this together. We are using a little less than half of the basement to make these rooms and are dealing with about a 1,000 square feet. So it has been quite an undertaking. We have been working on it since July. Okay, I get it that this was a long explanation of why I have not been blogging. But...I did take some pictures to show you what we have accomplished so far. Keep in mind that my hubby is only home two days a week, and works out of town the rest of the week. This weekend we will put the floor molding in the bedroom, and the closet doors as well as the fireplace.

And I had a wonderful, lush vegetable garden this year (inspite of these fast growing Iowa weeds) and didn't have to buy produce all summer long! Whoo hoo! It was my first real garden. (By real I mean one that actually produced :) And while working in my beautiful garden one day a starving little kitty came out of the cornfield. Of course I had to feed her. And she grew and gained weight, looking really healthy. One month later she had 4 kittens! Does anyone out there have kittens? They're alot of work! I mean, you have to play with them, hold them, kiss those baby noses! Whew I could hardly get anything done. I have since gotten the mother cat fixed, and the babies all have shots. (P.S. My hubby is REALLY happy about all of this.) I have made posters with their darling little photos on them (titled "Mug Shots") and I put them all over town. I have so far found a great home for 1 kitten..Only one! I feel like a mom who thinks her kids are absolutely the BEST..and can't understand why anybody wouldn't want to scoop up these little treasures for themselves! Oh well, the kitty saga goes on...Oh by the way, the mama cat, Lucy, is tired of them.

Great...now I feed the babies on the back porch and Lucy on the front porch. They now have seperate living quarters as well. Alot of work I tell ya!

Anyway, I was talking to my Aunt Mo the other day, and we don't get to talk very often. So she uses my blog to keep up with me. Ha! Fell of the face of the earth since July....

So Hi Auntie! I'm back at least for now. We will have mom's rooms ready by Dec. 1st!! The carpet will be layed on the 28th of Nov. then I will be back to blogging full time!!

I've missed you too.

And all of you out there in blog land.

A Shropshire Lad & Beating the Heat!

Boy it's been hot! Whew! I hope ya'll are keeping cool out there. A post of one of my David Austin Roses, "A Shropshire Lad." Isn't it gorgeous? The fragrance is unbelievably enticing, and sweet. Yummy...to say the least. My lavender did not due well this years (grumble, grumble) as the spring was so wet, their feet got soggy.

Meet Dash! This is my neighbor's puppy, who comes by every morning as I am gardening to get right into my business. After a pet, and a few trips to the back of the house to dump weeds (yes weeds grow fantastically here), she's ready for a dip. Plop! Right into the rain water held in the pig pot! She's a real cutie pie!

Some days, I even feel like joining her!

Hello Friends! After a long hiatus filled with life changes and new beginnings....I'm back! I've missed you all, and I don't know where to start in filling you in. So, I'm just going to begin at where I left off on my last blog. My mom is doing very well! Thank the Lord! She came to Iowa with me to do her radiation therapy and we drove about an hour each day to Ames. The William R. Bliss Cancer Center was filled with the most wonderful angels. Kind and considerate, caring and loving. Mom and I miss them! But her treatment went very smoothly with very little side effects. She is home now in Dallas gathering her things and getting rid of things to move to Marshalltown to be by me! I'm so excited! We haven't lived near each other in many many years, and I feel so blessed that I will be able to spend time with her. She is feeling well, and just as busy as ever! I wanted to thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. God is faithful.
I have been busy in my garden this year, a bit late, but things are coming to fruition nevertheless. I took the big step this year....ordering David Austin roses!! It's been a dream of my to fill my yard with DA roses and peonies. While I didn't plant any peonies this year, I did plant DA "Shropshire Lad & Gertrude Jekyll" roses. Gertrude is in bloom (above) and looking wonderful. I began with knockout roses to see if I could get these so called "full (fool) proof" roses to grow. They did very well for two years so now I am on to David Austin's. Wish me luck!
I also planted a vegetable garden this year! Oh my goodness, I am up to my ears in sweet peas, green beans, and onions. We have the most delicious beets too! The tomatoes are not ripe yet, but there are many many on the vine. I'm looking forward to those.
I have been so lax with my blog lately, I hope that you all haven't forgotten me!! It seems I have the attention span of a newt these days.
My hubby has gone back to his old job, and is gone most of the week again....just when I was getting used to him being home!!! I think this job is much better for his health and happiness, so we will manage.

Hello Friends~Bet you thought I fell off of the edge of the world!! It's been awhile for sure, and a crazy month. I've been in Dallas for just about a month with my mom. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of March, Bless her sweet heart. She had a Lumpectomy, and they took out some lymph nodes, and Thank you Lord!, no cancer in them!! We got the good news at the surgeon's office on her 83rd birthday! Oh my gosh, I just cried with tears of joy. She was a stage one. And they believe that they have gotten all of the cancer, and she will fly to Iowa to stay with me for her radiation therapy. It was so scary, but she remained very calm, trusting the Lord, and she was at peace through out the entire process of Dr.'s visits, (oh so many) and she was an outpatient for her surgery. I'm just amazed at how well she did! I only pray that I could handle it as well as she did. It will be so nice to have her here, and for me to be able to take her to her appts. A few days after I returned home, we had company for a few days, and it was a wonderful and relaxing visit. We went to Antique stores and visited the sites. It was Great!! On one of my visits, I found the most beautiful Cabin Crafts Chenille Bedspread! I was so blessed to get it a wonderful price. There's not a thing wrong with it!! I have listed it in my Ebay shop. I know that I am skimming through my life for the past month, but I am also in the midst of cleaning house and catching up with my gardens. We've almost got the mulch down, and are having to get out outside in between raindrops. I'm so happy to be back in blogland, and will be visiting all of you very soon. ~A Gooey Mess~

Hi All! I really don't know what has gotten into me lately....for 10 years I have used PINK for everything I made..no truly, I did. I found it difficult if not impossible to create without using PINK! People have actually written to me, asking that I make baby boy quilts! FREAK!!! Sorry no, unless you think he might like pink??? Even my mom, who is my biggest supporter by the way, would ask me, "So what kind of pink fabric did you buy today?" I came to believe that maybe, just maybe I was in a color-time-warp! But lately I have been exploring with many different colors of fabric...well, mostly camel, tan, beige, white, blaaah blaaah blaaah. (smiling) But I've come to love those colors as well, particularly white. Now for something country...Well, sort of country, I guess...actually I'm not sure WHAT country is, (and yet I live in the country), anyway, here's a country-folk quilt..Now...back to pink & white!!! Oh how I've missed you! So here's the question....am I losing it? Or do you get obsessed with colors and find that if looking at a color doesn't make you melt into a big gooey mess of hugs and kisses, it's just not a good color??? (Oh my...)

Good morning all! I looked out the window this morning and in between the snowflakes I saw that the Robins have returned! Oh my goodness and there were so many of these beautiful little birds~I would not be exaggerating if I said 100 robins on the lawn trying hard to find a frozen morsel in the grass. It is a day to rejoice! Even though it is still cold, still snowing, and not at all spring-like, the Robins give me a feeling of hopefulness and excitement that Spring is just around the corner. I wanted so much to share this beautiful sight with you but....the day was too dark and gloomy for a good photo. So....I decided instead to show you the new shawl! It is finished and I think it looks so pretty! I call it "Tidepools." It makes me think of the Caribbean blue waters. I could use a vacation to the islands right about now! Knitting Ocean Waves!

Hello Everyone!! Well I have begun a new shawl-this is the most beautiful shades of blue, purple and green. It reminds me of Ocean Waves. I found this wonderful Knit Shop in Ames, IA., called Rose Tree Fiber Shop . Oh my goodness you would not believe the Fab Fiber in Stock! Some of the Extraordinary Yarn in this store comes from locals in this area. I can't tell you how beautiful these yarns are!! The proprietor is the Most Adorable Lady, Rosemary Heideman, and what a story she has to tell about how she came to be in the Fiber business! She really is such a Darling Lady. Follow my link to her store and read about Rosemary in the about me section on the web page. What a Hoot! She was in our local paper not long ago which lead me to her store. You really must meet this Queen of Roses! Anyway, back to the story....Rosemary had this yarn spun, dyed by a local woman and it is Beautiful! It's chunky, then thinner, then thin, oh my! A Rainbow it even has PINK TINSEL spun into it! Wow! So...here's my new shawl with some of that yarn. I will post the finish product soon...Knit one...purl two...knit one..............Hugs!

~Put A Little Pink In Your Grey!~

Hello Friends! To offset the grey days here in Iowa...I've been knitting up a storm! Knitting is the perfect craft for winter for me. I always pick colors that brighten my world..and pink is one of my most favorite colors! Pink just turns my insides to jelly!! (smiling) So I gathered up all of my leftover pink stash and made this V shaped Shawl. It has two layers of fibers throughout the entire piece and it is so incredibly warm...I made extra long, thick fringe because I just love the casual messy look of it. What fun! And I must tell you, working on it was a delight! Now I'm off to block it, but I just had to share this with you.

I hope that you are all well and as excited as I am to have winter almost over!! Let the Sun Shine In!! Blessings all!

WAAAAAA!!! I'm Sick & The E-Coli Lady.....

Good Morning Friends! First off, I know that many of you have had the flu this year...I'm sorry, I feel for you! I had a bad night last night-no sleep and lots of body aches. Yuck! I know, I know what a big ol' baby I am! I admit it. I have been so blessed in my life with good health that I have no cause to complain. Okay....I'm done!
One World One Heart will begin soon, and I hope that I am done with my project for it. I have about 18 things I'm working on at once--that's one of them. I love OWOH and this will be the last year for it.
Okay...I like to keep things cheerful and sweet on my blog, but I have to mention this-Have you ever received one of those Walmart emails? You know the ones...with people dressed in goofy, wierd and sometimes really awful ways? Well, I received one the other day and one of the images has just BURNED into my BRAIN! This young lady has her baby laying down in a shopping cart, right next to her car, and the car door is open. She is changing a poopy diaper right in the big part of the shopping cart!!!! Where someone else would place their groceries!! Oh man, is that enough to send a germaphobe over the edge or WHAT? Geez, I'm never going to open a Walmart email again. Please Lord let the image go away! (smiling) and Lady if your out there and just happen to stop by my blog.......Don't do that again...I'm beggin' ya! Wow! I feel much better after the Rant...thank you!

New Black and White Rag Quilt...Hey actually finished something!

Hanging tabletopper (don't look at the empty shelf...another project for another day)

Hello friends out there in Blogland! Good Lord, I've been up since 4:00am this morning and I've been a whirlwind of free motion! I began by starting the dishwasher after breakfast, then sorted and began a load of clothes...Good start, right? I decided that vacuuming was in order (it's been awhile), so I brought out the vacuum, plugged it into the wall and took about 3 swipes. I thought I had better move some floor decorations and when I did, I found some beautiful peacock feathers that I had forgotten about! Yipee! Then I remembered that I had an old clay urn that needed an arrangement! So I worked on the peacock feather, pine needle (and other organic matter) arrangement until it was just the way I pictured it in my mind! Voila! As I was putting the arrangement on the table I noticed that I didn't like the way the quilt tabletopper looked with the arrangement so I removed the tablecloth, folded it up for storage. Then as I was walking back to admire my new floral creation, I noticed a BIG BARE WHITE WALL! Oh my GOSH! The perfect place for my tabletopper! So I got the tabletopper back out of storage....ironed it, and looked up on the internet how to hang a quilt. A Sleeve?? Okay, I can do that, and I did. I hung the little piece on the Giant White Wall! Very pleased with myself, I now have to redo the shelf...another project for later. I sat down to have some lunch, unload and reload the dishwasher. After lunch I walked into the living room and tripped over the vacuum! I realized then that it had been sitting there for 6 hours!! Six!! Holy Moly....Okay, so here's my question for the day:

Is anyone else out there as empty of concentration as I am????

Awaiting Spring

Hello Friends~Wow! I have never EVER taken this long off from Blogging...ever! But I needed a little break, and I had a Wonderful Holiday Season with my family, now I am thrilled to be back with you! We are enjoying (smiling) -7 degree weather right now. Yikes, It hurts my face! But we have really had a very mild winter this year, so I guess it's our turn. The snow pictures are out in our front yard.

Exciting news! Herrshners had a big sale, I got 10 skeins of pink merino wool!!! yarn for 1.99 a skein! I'm so happy. So I am knitting a basketweave wrap and it's coming along beautifully. Knitting is such a wonderful winter hobby. I love the warm wrap trailing down my legs as I knit. And it is yummy soft!

I have been reading your blogs so as not to get too far behind, perhaps some of you knew I was there!

I hope that you all had a fabulous holiday, that you are blessed in the coming year, and that you keep warm throughout this winter season. See you tomorrow!! Hugs~

~A Thankful Heart~

Good Morning Friends! Wow! We are having quite a wind storm! Even my dog doesn't want to be out in it! (smart girl) I want to wish you a Joyful Thanksgiving, chock full of family, love, and laughter....and Thankfulness. I so very thankful for my wonderful family, my soulmate and partner Mikey, and for all of the richness that my life has held. When I think back on my friends and family, many of whom are gone now, I thank God that He brought them into my life, that He allowed for me to love them deeply and enjoy them. I am thankful for our men and women overseas risking life and limb for us. I pray that their families will be able to attend Thanksgiving festivities without too much heart wrenching yearning and sadness for their missing loved ones. I am thankful that the Lord has made me who I am, warts and all, and that He is removing the warts one by one...year by year. I am loved~I am thankful.

Hello I've Missed You All!

I can't tell you all how much I have missed you and missed blogging and reading...It's been awful! But Good Lord I'm such an old Poop! Honestly, anything new (technology) drives me up a wall! I have been working daily with Windows 7 and trying to figure out my new computer. It seems that everything is in a different spot! I was so sad that all of my information and photos were lost in the crash...but today is a new day right? I'll take more pictures...

Thank you all for hanging in there with me while I was gone. I did manage to get 150 bulbs planted, have you seen the newest and coolest tulips and narcissus this year? I just could help myself! Stunning as they are! I was a diggin' fool, and could barely lift my arms the next day.

These are photos of a new rag quilt I just finished. Cararmel and Cream. I love the colors (even tho' they aren't PINK), they are so warm and snuggly. So in a rare departure from my pink obsession....it's a rare one for sure...because 2 pink rag quilts are cut and laid out ready to sew.

Also, my family (mom, brother and sister in law) have all decided to come here for Christmas this year!!!! Yeah! I am so thrilled, I've already gotten out my Holiday linens! Whoo-Hoo! I'm so excited!

Moving right along....I have my new computer and I am in the process of learning Microsoft 7 as I have been using XP for years! Yikes...what a difference! So many options and junk on here, I am totally lost! I got my camera going this morning but it seems the pictures are small, and with paint, there really is no option for fixing a picture (at least none that I found so far). But I'm back and I can read your blogs again!! Yeah!!! I missed you all so much. I'm going to try and figure this contraption out, then I will be back blogging. It's so pretty here now and I will take tons of photos. So for now friends, I leave you with a nosegay of pretty roses. Hugs~

~Country Burlap Wreath~

Hello Everyone! Well I just finished my front door FALL wreath! I found this tutorial on Roeshel's The DIY Show Off I love her blog!! She features great ideas with how-to's. I've had so much visiting her blog. This burlap wreath began as a fall wreath, however, I couldn't help myself to add some sewing items in addition to berries and dried Cinnamon Oranges. I chose a darker burlap and a green gingham bow. Some old buttons and thread (in fall colors), an ornate pair of old scissors. It was so fun! I have lead feet/fingers when decorating for fall. I just don't want the summer to end I guess. But since today is the first day of fall 2010, I thought I'd finish and hang my sort of Fall wreath. Thanks Roeshel for a wonderful tutorial!!

Saturday Morn! I love Saturdays, they are my most favorite day of the week, because for me they are Free days-Creative Days. It's cold and windy, rainy..yep, seems like fall! We planted pole beans this year, and I cannot believe how many beans we have gotten from 3 plants! Seems as though every 2 days the plants are full again. We've put up enough already to last a winter!! AND there's MORE!

It is so very hard to believe that it has been 9 years since that fateful day. There are a few profound moments in my life that I will never forget, that are ingrained in my heart and my thoughts forever...the moment I found out that our President was assassinated in Dallas, TX, the sight of the Challenger exploding in midair....and the cruel devastation of so many lost souls in New York on September 11, 2001. I was going to post a photo of 9-11, but chose instead to post the rainbow that is outside my window today. It is hopelessly dark and dreary, but...there is a rainbow, so there is hope. I wish to offer my thoughts and prayers today to those who lost their lives and to their families. We will Never Forget. Blessings~

~A Miracle & A Blessing~

A few days ago I asked for prayer for my mom who was going to have surgery on her carotid artery which was "very seriously" blocked according to the ultra sound which was read by her physician. She was sent to a surgeon who specializes only in carotic artery surgery, and the appt. was made for one week from the original diagnosis. She had much prayer during that week, and I had made arrangements to go there and care for her. On Wed. she went to the surgeon, and he did another ultra sound on both sides of her neck. He told her that her carotid arteries were good, very healthy! What???! She told him that her doctor had said that it was very seriously blocked..how can that be? The surgeon explained that she had a small block in a vein leading to her face, but that there are several veins that lead to the face, and that they would take over for the blocked one, further that the blockage would break up on their own, and that it was common for someone of her age to experience this occurance. No surgery~go home..enjoy your life-You are fine! Wow! I cried when my mom called and told me the news, she was crying too! I believe in Miracles!! Thank you Lord!!
P.S. My dog is really happy too as I unpacked my clothes and cancelled the boarding appointment for her. My hubby is thrilled that I will be here to spend his vacation with him. And I am so thankful that my dear, sweet mom doesn't have to undergo more surgery, and that she is in good health. What a week! Thank you so very much for your prayers and I wish for you many many Blessings~

Hi Friends~I'm off to Dallas, my mom has to have carotid artery surgery on both sides. This will be the second time on the left side, bless her heart. She has had such a time in the last 5 years and I must come to you to ask for prayer for this surgery. You are always so faithful when I am in need. I love Vintage items so much, and it is getting so difficult to find nice things...it was like Christmas! BEAUTIFUL!! I was so excited! I grew up in California, in beautiful San Diego. It's been quite awhile since I've lived there, but lately I've been missing the sea. The sounds of the waves crashing on the shore, the warm sand squishing between my toes, and the great organic sandwiches from a deli in Del Mar. One summer in particular, my dear friend and I made a pact to go to the beach every single day of summer! (I think it was really all about the sandwiches). It is my recollection that our mission was accomplished! Of course, this was between our junior and senior year in high school when life was pretty carefree, and I could eat was ever I wanted and still remain a beanpole. We didn't care about the effects of the sun on our skin (my nose peeled about 40 times!), we didn't worry about anything except which one of us would be driving to the beach the next day. It was a wonderful time! And as season winds down...can you recollect one perfect & defining summer you spent in your youth? I am keeping this memory, and celebrating each and every new day. Good Morning Friends! All done! This quilt is made with a soft white nubby woven cotton fabric that has the most wonderful linen look! The back is a burlap colored ticking which was sewn in a basket-weave. I love the way it accentuates the poofy seams. I hand sewed 56 vintage buttons, one in the center of each square. It has a very tonal & peaceful quality, the only thing missing is the hammock and a box of Bon Bons! Today, I wish you inspiration! Blessings~

Whew! It's so hot---the dog won't run! Good Morning all~Check out this ol' girl! Since moving out to the country last year, I've noticed a wonderful change in Freeway. She's so mellow and calm..shepherds are really not known for m-e-l-l-o-w. At least this one wasn't. For the first 6 years she ran circles around me literally, and was so busy all of the time. Now of course she's getting older, but finally the contentment has kicked in..(thank you Lord) She goes outside, and roams around for a while, visits the neighbor dogs, looks for squirrels and rabbits, and then she comes back and lays on the porch. About once every two hours a car goes by, it's the neighbors going to their horses, and then the horses go by...and she lays...then it's time to come in for a cookie...she goes back out and lays...What a life~what a time~the dog days of summer.

Hello Friends~I spent a busy and productive weekend completing this rag quilt, adding to my lavender farm, and cooking fresh food (nothing processed), meals for hubby & I.

As it has been so hot here with humidity in the 80's and 90's, my husband stayed in and took a rest in the afternoons. We had SO much fun watching old movies, the Odd Couple was one. I just love Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattheu (sp?) GREAT! Even though I've seen it a dozen times, I can't help but giggle with the "Coo Coo Pidgeon Sisters!"

After finishing and listing the rag quilt above, which is one of my all time favorites, I began a new linen look quilt with a soft French theme. These sweltering days give me a wonderful excuse to stay in and actually get something done in my shop. I have really enjoyed working outside this year, planning and planting. I purchased the book, "Tasha Tudor's Garden" and I was so inspired by her beautiful landscaping! I wish I could have known her, and would like to plan a trip to see her rustic home and magnificent gardens.

Today...shopping, quilting, laundry and healthy meal preparation are on my list. Do you write a list for yourself? I find that with a list I get so much more accomplished. Without a list...well let's just say I'm all over the place and everything is half done! Well, off to my list. Bless you all on this beautiful Monday!

Supremes de Volaille aux Champignons!

Hello friends!
In my previous post I wrote to you about a wonderful book that I was reading about the life of Julia Child, "My Life In France." This book inspired me to try one of her recipes! Since this book has no recipes, I found one of her recipes online. Supremes de Volaille aux Champignons (Chicken Breasts with Mushrooms and Cream.) I know what you are thinking....and NO this is NOT DIET FOOD! But it was the most incredible dinner I've had in a very long time. It looked so beautiful I even took a picture of it. Of course with my limited photography skills it didn't turn out well(it was yellowed) so then I tried to photoshop it a bit (another skill in which I am sorely lacking) and this is the best I could do. But I wanted to share with you the fablous meal we had last night. I shopped at the farmers market in the morning so everything was fresh! I served the chicken with swiss chard, steamed and tossed with olive oil and fresh pressed garlic. A slice of homemade wheat bread on the side. What a great meal! Now my goal is to locate a first addition of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" as I discovered that I loved the process of putting together a meal worth the effort! And truly it wasn't difficult. Chicken breasts, shallots, mushrooms, wine, lemon, cream, parsley and beef stock. A little olive oil as well. Today a salad! I ate only 1/2 of a chicken breast, and all of the greens. Good Morning Friends~I had to share with you a delightful book that I have just begun...and can't put down..."My Life in France," Written by Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme(her nephew). I love to cook, and try at least one new recipe a couple of times a month as I get tired of the same old stuff all of the time. I am so fortunate that my big guy will eat anything on a plate, literally. I remembered Julia Child from her television show when was young-er(I keep reminding myself that I am not getting old, just maturing nicely). Anyway, as I watched Julia cook, I remember being more drawn to her character than I was to her recipes and cooking. Her voice, her stature, and her intense absorption in the act of cooking, I think it was her passion that drew me to watch her demonstrations. (I never made one of her recipes!) In this book her character shines, her devotion to family and friends as well as her love of all things French, especially French cuisine. It isn't all about food though, really, it is about the woman that I found so facinating so many years ago. I think this book would appeal to anyone as it is a remarkable journey of finding passion...and living it! Bon Appetit!

Lavender Winds

Hello Friends! Wow, it's been such a long time since I've posted!! I actually had to read my last post to figure out where I left off. Well, I am up to my ears in lavender! Actually all but two are first year babies, but two of last years plants gave me enough lavender for this large beautiful wreath! Also, enough left over for my dear friend Vicki who visited, to take some home!! I've been so busy planting and caring for my little lavender farm, I've totally neglected my blog. In addition to planting lavender, my hubby and I have researched and made the decision to purchase and put up a wind turbine. We have a nice breeze most days, and strong wind the rest of the days so this is a perfect place for a turbine.

I am having a ball, working in the yard, but my sewing and indoor production has been sadly lacking. Hopefully I will have some wonderful projects to share with you soon. I have been reading your blogs and keeping caught up with you although I haven't commented much.

Fun With Burlap....And Other Things..

For so long I have been wanting to make something with burlap. I love the texture and the monochromatic color of this fabric, also I remember when my mom would buy potatoes in burlap when I was young. So, it's kind of new and old for me. Yesterday it was raining so I got out my burlap and made this pillow! It was fun and great to get back into handcrafting.

Now for the big news! My hubby and I have a little over 2 acres here in Iowa, and it is all grass. It has been on my heart lately that we should do something with it. For many years I have grown lavender, just a few plants here and there because I love the rich frangrance, and the delicate flowers. I also use it for my garden, keeping the insects, deer and rabbits out. They dislike the fragrance of lavender...poor dears, they just don't know a good thing when they smell it! I also use it for sachets, cleaning, and candles. Anyway, hubby and I have decided to plant a lavender farm! This week I will have several plants coming in and we will be tilling and preparing the ground for the new little lavender plants! Doing what you love is a wonderful thing, no matter the hard work, it is enjoyable! I can just picture the beautiful slim purple wands swaying in the wind! Now it is time for the work however...we just need mother nature to comply. It has rained for 2 weeks now...and we need a nice day to begin our lavender garden. This time, I will take before and after pictures!!

Also, in the coming week I will let you in on an exciting venture that we are undertaking...that's the "wind" part of yesterday's post...Hmmmm...what could it be??

What a Beautiful Sunrise this morning! Below: A new Rag Quilt...finally!!

Good Morning Friends! Well, it's been an amazing last few weeks for us! Hubby's job is going better and better, and he is more relaxed than he has been in a year. It's so nice to have him back to his old self! We came to a breaking point...and realized that what we were lacking was faith. Faith that the Father knows in advance what is going to happen, and that He will see us through. We got so caught up in the tension each day, that we were beginning to stress out BEFORE my husband even left home in the morning! We are believers, and we love the Lord...but sometimes we forget to let God handle the hard stuff, the stuff I can't even understand! So for the last few weeks we have returned to the basics, we are reclaiming our lives, and rededicating our hearts to the Lord.

I have re-learned some valuable lessons amid the turmoil of this last year. 1. Let go and Let God. 2. When I am in a messy spiritual place, my creative spirit is non-existent. And 3. My memory is in dire need of a little Ginko!

Yes, it must be memory fade that is causing me to forget the basics! Ya think??? Let go and let God. Easy right?? Sheesh!

I have more wonderful news which I will post in the next few days and weeks. It has to do with Lavender......Wind.....and Farm.....Can you guess??? Hugs everyone and thank you so much for hanging in there with me throughout this difficult period. Blessings~~

Memorial Day....

Hello Friends, on this special day we thank our military men and women, past and present, for their service to our great country. Thank you for your sacrifice, for your selflessnes and the security that you afford us here at home. We love you!!

Now to the pictures....I cannot for the life of me remember to take "before" pictures of things! We just dive on in, and wish we had the before pics after we're done..Anyway, this basement door and the planters on either side were dirt and boulders. (see boulders in planter on right). The boulders had shifted and moved toward the door making it rather narrow. The planter on the right was filled to overflowing with ivy and creeping junipers. I'm not fond of either of the two plants as we are both allergic to the juniper, and the ivy is a great hiding spot for skunks and mice and spiders! Last week I spent a couple of hours each day cleaning out the ivy and hubby dug out the junipers on his last day off. This weekend we put up the walls. We still need a load of river rock for the planters, and that brick walkway will be changed as well, but we got a good start on things anyway. On Sunday, we watched movies, made fajitas for dinner, and relaxed. Wishing you a peaceful holiday weekend. Blessings~

A morning stroll through my gardens, everything still damp from the rains overnight. A little bunny hops out of the prairie garden, we were both startled to see one another! Thankfully Freeway was off chasing a squirrel in a grove of trees. The air this morning is so humid, so thick, you could cut it with a knife...but it is cool yet so very comfortable. Yes, spring has finally arrived in full bloom to Iowa. Today I have 7 more flowers to get in the ground, and I will be pretty much done with the planting. My vegetable garden is coming up so well however, the darn weeds are already taking over!
My hubby's dad and step mom will be coming in June for a visit! I can't wait to see them! And then my dear friend Vicki will also be visiting in June. What a banner month it will be! I love company!!!! With my husband's work, we have never lived close to our families, so each and every visit is more than special.

Well off to hoe the vegetable garden. I am almost finished with a rag quilt that has taken me a month to finish!! Can you believe that?? Sheesh! I can't seem to stay indoors long enough to sit at my sewing machine. And I have been working on the sweetest rag rug for months and months, but I'm still at it!! You will love it, and I will take some awesome pics when I get a little further done. Hugs and Love-from my garden to Yours!

Out for a Morning Stroll.....

Good Morning Friends! As I was digging and weeding in the front yard I noticed a beautiful deer walking down the street, slowly and peacefully, just having a morning stroll. I was able to retrieve my camera before it came to be in front of my yard. So I sat on the front porch and waited for it to make it's way down the road. Just as I snapped this photo, the neighbors herd dogs came running out lickety-split and chased it into the conservation park below our home. The deer was running and leaping with its tail straight up in the air! It was so wonderful to see. Between yesterday and today I have planted 36 flowers and mowed the 2 acres of grass! This was my first mowing, hubby has been doing it, and I am so sore! By the end of the fall, I will be in Great shape I'm certain. Blessings to you dear friends, enjoy the moment!

Fresh from the Garden....

Hello Friends! Now that the warm weather is here...I have been a bum about my blog!! First thing in the morning I'm out on the deck having a cup of coffee and listening to the birds...next thing I know I'm off to the nursery to add a little color here, a little broad leaf there, and on and on. So by the time I come back in, I've got to get supper ready for my wonderful man! I have also begun to volunteer at our local hospital here in Marshalltown. It's been a wonderful experience, it truly has! I have met the nicest people in the last few weeks at the hospital. I'm so blessed by this opportunity to help out in my community.
As for moving, we don't yet know when or even if that will happen, we continue to pray and ask for wisdom, and clarity in the midst of confusion and turmoil. We are thanking the Lord for our joyful hearts, our health, our love for each other. We are so very, very blessed.
I will be joining your blogs this weekend!! Can't wait to see what you have been up too! I am so inspired by your words and your creativity. I have been sadly lacking a creative spirit lately. ...One Duck Up A Tree...A Graduation..And A Fond Farewell..

Can you see this Crazy Duck up in the Tree?? Every morning it comes to sit in the very same spot..staying for about a half hour. It struck me so funny, I have never seen a duck in a tree before! Always they would be walking around on the ground-don't get me wrong, I know they fly, I just never saw one up a tree before! Cute!

A graduation picture from last Friday night!-Okay...it was def. a BAAAD Hair Day! But it was a wonderful day all the same. My hubby was taking the picture of me..Surprise!!!

On a sad note...little Tracy is not with us any longer. She was our neighbors little boy's doggy. We'll sure miss the little rascal! See you in heaven little one!
We had such a storm yesterday! Rain was the least of it, but the Wind was incredible! Lifting heavy items and moving them around on the back deck! It was so loud, that I had to turn the music up to keep Freeway from getting stuck trying to crawl under the bed. Today it is quiet here, overcast and kind of gloomy---but quiet. God Bless my Oklahoma friends~may you be protected from storms today. What devastation!

She is Elegant, and Charming, Witty and loves the Lord with all of her heart. She is Oh So Warm and Cuddly! She is an Adventurer, an Explorer. She is Fun! Her laughter is music to my ears.

And how she loves to laugh!!! She will try anything, even driving a bobcat or lawn tractor! She is 82 years old and still Smokin' Hot! She is Graceful and Dainty....

Her energy is boundless. She is a teacher, and a student. But most of all.....

Good Morning! And what a beautiful day it is! First off thank you so much friends for your encouragement and wonderful welcome back yesterday!! I was so happy to hear from you, and so blessed by your kindness. I feel energized today and ready to roll! Bless you MA, Alix, Cindi, Betty, Judi, LindaMay, Lynne, and Tammy, and especially Mom. I love you all!!

I did start painting the wagon, poor ol' thing, I think it looks better. I'm going to put some pretty flowers in it, and plant wild flowers in front of it. But today, I'll finish painting. We had originally thought we'd restore her, but on closer inspection, we realized it would be impossible as there isn't one single piece of good wood left on her. Not ONE! So, I'm painting in hopes that it will stay together for a few years. If we are still here...we will use the hardware, get some old barn wood and build another one. It's been blowin' pretty hard here.. up to 70 mph winds, the last few days. I did paint one day, until I discovered that I had more paint on me, than the buckboard did. I don't think it was ever sealed. I didn't really use paint on it, rather a sealer with a cedar tint. I wanted it to show up a bit. Whaddya Think??

Oh yes, and the farmer was here at the crack of dawn this morning!

New Curtains with Roses

Hello Friends~It's been awhile since I've blogged...I hope you are all well and enjoying springtime! It's been a whirlwind here..literally and figuratively. I have planted my vegetable garden, and Gurney's delivered a package chock full of springtime goodies! Have you see the Sorbet peonies? Oh my gosh, they're beautiful! Delicate pink, and white blossoms. Perfect!! And I also have a love for lavender, so I added to my garden several varieties. I finished school and and will graduate on Friday! I was talking to my friend the other day...(we have been buddies for 51 years now) and she was telling me that she is getting married in July! Talk about a couple of LATE BLOOMERS!!! She's getting married, and I'm graduating from college!! Ha! Oh well, it's never to late for anything, is it??

I have been struggling with faith lately..it seems that when everything is going well, hey, I'm a faithful Christian!! Right on board, for sure. BUT....when things are tenuous and strained, well, I just fall apart! To make a long story short..my sweet husband is working for a real stinker! It's been a long hard year for him. For those of you who don't know, we just moved here to Iowa a year ago (almost a year), and my hubby has 30 years on the job. He now has 4 days a month off, and is on call 24 hrs. a day...it's exhausting and it's wearing on him. So, he is going to put in for a different position, which very well may have us packing up and moving again. I am heartbroken. We love it here, and can see ourselves retired here. My husband has about 4 more years until retirement. The new job will take him out of town again from Monday-Friday. The last year has been the only time in our married life that my husband has been home every night, and I've become very spoiled to have his company. I don't look forward to moving and being alone in a new State once again, not knowing anyone. So that's my dilemma..my whiny, story. I should have more faith that what happens will be for the best, and deep down I know it will. I really do. And yet I struggle, and despair.

On the bright side, my bedroom redo is coming along. The top picture is a sneak preview of some pretty white linen curtains I made for the bedroom windows. I didn't line them (we have blinds on the windows too, so these are just for "frou frou") and they just look lovely when the wind blows through. I made little flowers and attached them to the curtains. I saw the flowers on a pillow that my friend June from Laughing With Angels made awhile ago, and thought they would be beautiful tossed onto white linen curtains. They do! Thanks June!! They are so light and fresh I love the way they came out...unfortunately, the picture didn't turn out too well. When I finish with the room I will take pictures of the entire redo.

The horses are out again!! I missed them through the winter months. My neighbors across the road, just had 8 baby calves! They are so delightful!! I just love those cute little black noses!!

I have almost finished sealing and repainting the buckboard...today I will get that done. Then I'm going to plant a small wildflower garden in front of it. And of course put a few pots of flowers in it! I'll take pictures of it tommorow.

What a Beautiful Day today! Crisp, clear, clean. Oh I love these spring days! I am making a mental list of all of the things that need to be done in the yard...The old buckboard needs some shoring up to insure that pots full of flowers can be safely set inside. That dirt under the wagon is actually a flower bed that hubby accidently sprayed roundup on last year....thought it was weeds....

What a pretty sunrise this morning! Did you see it? I am up at 5:00am each day to make breakfast for my wonderful husband and see him off to work. I usually spend the next two hours doing homework. It's so quiet here always, but the early morning is particularly peaceful as the cows, horses, and that silly old mule haven't awakened...well, at least their tummy's aren't growling yet. Most of my 4 neighbors are gone to work by six o'clock, and I go out to have coffee on the deck, plan my day and let the dog run around. I am so blessed to be able to have time like this, and I am very grateful, never taking it for granted. In my daily readings I came across this Quiet Corners reading by William Arthur Ward,

Spring Forward~

The geese are coming back in droves! The sky is alive with the sounds of honking and the glorious sight of chevron positioning. Forward...back...forward....back as one tires, and another pulls up to take over the lead. The geese in the rear of the formation are constantly honking to remind the flock to keep up the speed. Flying in a V pattern, each set of wings create an uplift for the goose behind, making it more aerodynamic and easier to fly with less wind resistance. If one bird is ill, two will leave the formation, following the sick bird to the ground and stay with it, until it can fly once again, or it dies. What a beautiful relationship! The geese remind me that spring is on its way!

~ It's DeTox for Me!~

For years I have been trying to find a non toxic multi purpose cleaner that I can use daily inside my home without the worry that I am poisoning my hubby, myself and Freeway. Honestly, I have used some cleaning products that would curl your toes! Stuff that catches in your throat and makes you cough. Shower cleaners that made me dizzy! And cleaners that corroded the bathroom fixtures. How toxic is that? My poor old dog would sneeze and run into another room when I cleaned. My hubby & I would wake up with stuffy noses and headaches. We're talking TOXIC! Several months ago I happened to catch a "Dr. OZ" when he was speaking about the health dangers of toxic cleaning fluids. He said not to buy any product that doesn't have the ingredients listed. I went to my cupboard, and noticed that several of the products didn't have the chemicals listed! He gave a recipe for an easy to make, non toxic cleanser and I began to use it. I only wish that I had found it sooner! I wanted to share it with you in case you missed OZ. Bonus!!! It turns out that in the last several months (4 or 5) I have saved a substantial amount of money on cleaning goods.

I like that! But most of all we can breathe better in this home of ours and we haven't had headaches on a regular basis like before. And... it smells good and clean.

Here is the recipe, so easy to make:

1 tbl. Borax (remember the 20 mule team?)

3 tbl. vinegar

2 cups water

1 tbl. liquid dish soap (not dishwasher soap)(not shown in picture)

1 drop essential oil (optional) I use lavender because it is tolerated by all, and I happen to love it!

Mix all ingredients together and shake it up. Get yourself a 360 squirt bottle (great for high places and toilet bowls) and spray!

I use this on counter tops, my pergo floor, all appliances, even windows and mirrors.

As I said I've been testing it out for a few months, and like it more and more with each use. So if you have been wanting to eliminate some of the toxic chemicals that you use in your homes, try this, it's great!

Foggy days make my eyes feel like they are just not awake yet, and I should get right back in bed!
There is a unique beauty in fog, a blurring, a melding of black and white. A meeting place of frozen ground and warm air. A hint that spring is slowly creeping up, and the world will once again be filled with bright, invigorating splashes of color from one end of the spectrum to the other. And this is the moment of awakening as the earth opens her eyes after a long winters rest, but...she's just not ready to get out of bed yet! That's okay ol' girl...just take your time...but hurry up!!

This is Tracy...Not So Innocent!

At last it has arrived! Bright and early at 7:30am my package from "Quilt for Kids" and Downy landed on my doorstep! Well sort of....the UPS man drove up and the 3 doggies from across the street came barreling into the driveway...(the UPS man usually has treats for them, new driver today-no treats) I was in my housecoat and PJ's waiting for the driver to pull away so I could snatch up my package from the porch. I wasn't fast enough for that little rascal Tracy the puppy. She so adorable, but really she is just in every body's business...all the time! We recycle here, glass, plastic and newspapers and every garbage day I see her running like crazy, so proud of herself with a plastic bag of recyclable trash in her mouth! Just prancing down the street to her home. Poor people....they probably end up with more trash!! Anyway back to the story, the quilt kit came in a plastic shipping bag...can you guess?? I am running down the driveway trying to reclaim my quilt kit from the doggy...in my housecoat and pink fuzzy slippers! As it happens, the school bus full of kids goes by (wonderful), but the school bus causes Tracy to drop the bag in the driveway in order to chase the bus! I grab my quilt kit, lose my pink fuzzy slipper in a mud puddle. When I turn to get the slipper out of the mud, I see Tracy running full board at me. (she loves me) From 4 ft away she takes a flying leap and bounces off of my chest with 4 muddy paws which land on my beautiful WHITE housecoat! It's Monday....and I love dogs.....

I will write about the quilt tomorrow...when I am clean...and warm.

Herbert Hawk sitting right outside my livingroom window. Notice that he is an unabashed voyeur...Staring directly into my house, he stayed for 10 minutes, then flew off in the vicinity of my birdfeeder (Oh No!) I could not look. But after awhile he was back sitting on this perch staring into the window once again. Freeway is always happy to see him....We are so blessed to live on our little hilltop which we share with horses, doggies, cats, hawks and eagles. Also a few cows...and a very vocal mule who has an odd attraction to my husbands work truck!.

Look at those pretty eyes! This ol' gal is pretty happy for the warm up we are having this week! It's been in the high 30's and will be in the 40's for all of this coming week!! Whoo-Hoo!! For some of us perhaps (Alix in Florida:-) this doesn't seem REAL warm-but frankly me and my Arrow here are very very happy!! Mike & I put insulation up in the garage attic this morning, what a job! Dirt from head to toe. Glad that's done. My mom went out shopping for groceries with her friend today, she's getting better and better everyday. I am now on my way downstairs to hop on the treadmill. (arch enemy) Have a wonderful weekend Angels!

Good Morning!~What a difference a day makes! First...I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and words left yesterday on my blog. I am so grateful for you, and so blessed that I can reach out to you in times of angst and sadness to know that you will be there in prayer. I will be there for you as well, you can count on me.
It is difficult to be living so far away from my mom, she in Dallas, TX. and I in Marshalltown, IA. When things come up, as they do in life, the helpless feeling that shrouds my life is overwhelming and at these times I feel that the only thing I can do is pray. I am never disappointed in the power of prayer, and the blessings that are received when two or more are gathered.
On Tuesday this week my mom's doctor was going to put her in the hospital, as she had pneumonia in both lungs. She will be 82 on April 12th and she hadn't been feeling well for two weeks. She had been under the Dr.'s care for a week with little improvement, terribly wheezy and congested. Before he made the final decision to hospitalize her, he took chest x-rays. Through the x-rays he could see a small improvement which was not apparent by listening to her. He wanted her to see a pulmonary specialist as soon as she could get an appt. She called yesterday and the nurse said, " We just now had a cancellation, the Dr. can see you today!" She went in at 2:00 yesterday(her sweet and dear friend Katie took her). The specialist listened to her lungs, took x-rays, and told mom that the pneumonia was gone!!! She said that my mom has bronchitis, but that the pneumonia was completely gone! So while she is not out of the woods yet..it was wonderful news. Thank you Jesus!! She will be on all new medicine now, as the medicine she was on made her tired and confused, and affected her memory. I spoke with her several times yesterday and she is like a new person! Actually, she's more like her old self, energetic, and upbeat, and so relieved as am I. When I heard this wonderful report, I just cried...I am still weepy. The power of prayer! I can't tell you the difference in my mom from one day to the next! It is truly a miracle, and I thank you, and am ever grateful for your prayers and support for my dear, sweet mom. She is on the road to recovery now, and it will be hard to keep her at rest...she's already talking about going back to the gym!! Oh boy.....
In deep gratitude and with a joyful heart I sign off today...I won't be going to the gym however, I think I'll take a nice long nap......

Blessings Blog Angels~once again I am coming to you for prayer. My mom is very ill with pneumonia. I have been awake most of the night in prayer for the healing hands of Jesus to caress her lungs. She will see a specialist today.

For all of my 54 years, my mom has been my champion, my spiritual guide, my friend...she has been the music in my life. She is my heart. Please pray for her today, and remember her in your thoughts and prayers throughout the week. Thank you so very, very much. Sharon

Blue Skies and Icy Trees

Do you see that little red bump on the bottom right of the picture? That is a fire hydrant (my hubby's yard art!) But look how tall the snow is!

Whoo-Hoo! It's a heat wave folks!! Today will be 30 degrees!! I've got my sunscreen set out next to my lawn chair, sunglasses, scarf and earmuffs, down jacket and a cup of hot tea and I'm ready to roll!

Having grown up in San Diego, CA. and spending most of my adult life in Las Vegas, NV.....this ice chamber in the Midwest poses some high hurdles for a warm weather girl. Thankfully I have come to love the seasons in the Plain States, the Wonderful Midwest Hospitality, the kind and caring folks that remind me of the respect we learned to have for each other when I was a child. We weren't in too much of a hurry to lend a helping hand, to wave hello, to enjoy time spent together. We shared what we had if somebody needed it, and we did it gladly. We weren't bigger or better than anyone else...we were just in it all together. The folks here are quieter somehow, they don't give an opinion unless they are asked. I don't find people so angry here. It's peaceful. Living in the Midwest has brought all of those wonderful values back into my life, and has given me a sense of belonging and an excitement for ordinary things. So, while it may be only 30 degrees outside, I think I'll just be happy that the warm up is coming, look forward to my flower garden pushing up through the snow, and the green grass underneath the ice. Soon enough it will be Spring, but there is also amazing joy in the anticipation.

A sunny day puts a whole new perspective on things doesn't it? A beautiful bright sun filtering through the living room windows finds me sitting on the floor, face to the sun cutting tiny pieces of fabric for a new tablerunner pattern. It was so warm, that I slipped on a summer top!! I am dreaming of spring today! The old girl needs a perch however, but she's still enjoying the view! You're probably getting sick of the constant weather updates on this blog....but truly, I've never lived anywhere that had so much snow! 62.5" now.....and more expected! Oh well, my pal and I-we'll just enjoy the warmth of the sun...on this day..at this moment.

Attention Vancouver!! Free Moguls in Iowa!! AND....all the ice you can dream of right here in my front yard! We deliver!
Cabin fever was upon me yesterday, I had snow on the walk...I didn't care...snow on the porch...not my problem...snow on the driveway...so what! I'm tired of shoveling...
Today is a much different story. As I was getting into the shower I noticed that my batwings are diminishing. What??? My biceps actually had a "pea sized bulge." Whoo-Hoo! Shoveling tons of snow has it's own rewards! There's always a bright side isn't there? Sometimes we just have to look REAL DEEP to find it.
I don't know if you can tell from the photo or not, but we have 8-10 mini mountains of snow in the yard! AND more on the way Friday...I really need to purchase some cross-country skis to get the trash can and mail out. I tromped out to fill up the bird feeders yesterday and the snow was up to my thighs..those lucky birds...
Today promises sunshine...and a day with sunshine is always a good day.

Yikes! It's -6 right now, and Blessed be I don't have to go out! In fact...I stood in the living room looking out to the front yard to take these pictures!! (smiling) Waaaay to cold for me...and my dog. This morning poor little Freeway was in and out so fast, I barely had time to shut the door! In some places at the driveway, the snow is over 4 feet! Welcome to Iowa!! My hubby is called out a lot with different emergencies, and he hasn't had time to scrape off the driveway with his skid steer. Our wonderful neighbor across the street, Jason, has come over every snow day for the past week and cleaned it off!! God Bless him!! My hubby does their drive when he's home. What a great neighborhood. I looked out the other day, and my next door neighbor was blowing the end strip of our driveway where the snowplow left a deposit! Wonderful people here in Iowa, we are so blessed. I will take more pictures today...later...when it's above 0! Hang in there friends in the East...we'll make it through this winter!!

I almost forgot! Yesterday, Freeway was just barking to beat the band..I looked out to see what was going on-there was a magnificent Bald Eagle just flying around the yard, then landing in the trees out front, then flying some more. It was a sight to behold! I ran around trying to locate my camera, as it is never where I think it should be...and by the time I returned to the window, the eagle was in flight over the trees. Darn! It is spectacular to see them up close, it always surprises me how large they are!! Honest to Pete...it would have darkened the sun....if we had any sun..that is... Blessings~

~Cutie Pie Quilt for Haiti Finished!~

Some of you might know that I have been working on a quilt for a young girl in Haiti. In spite of the fact that Haiti has a tropical climate, quilts are not just for warmth-they are also for comfort, and these little ones need comfort for sure. Huggable comfort...Since I cannot be there to give them a squeeze and offer encouragement, I'm sending this quilt along instead. So far, "Quilts for Haiti" has collected almost 50 quilts to send to the children of Haiti. Here's the one I'm sending. Bright, bold, happy colors in pink (of course).

Sunshine: A beautiful gift in pink and green made by my mom! Isn't she the BEST? I can't believe it is so perfectly done. No flaws, (unlike my knitting:-) just perfect. It's just as bright and beautiful as the sunshine! This is a crochet project, and she made one for us, and one for my brother Mike and his darling wife Carol. My mom always says, that she is not very creative....HELLO!! I love it. And the colors are so perfect for our home. Divine!!!.....

Greetings! I love Saturdays! I have spent the morning sewing on quilts and rearranging my bedroom. I am going to make a white summer quilt for our bed...it probably won't go over too well with the dog who considers it HER bed. But of course there is pink my next to favorite color..hubby wouldn't go for that at all...Oh well White it is!!

But first I am finishing off the quilt for Haiti. I will post a picture of it when I am finished. I chose pink (of course) because it is for a young girl, but then I thought she might like bright and vibrant colors. So...I'm making it BRIGHT Pink!! (smiles)

Aren't they Precious? Darling little Cupids with the cutest little Bums!! Had to have em'. There's nothing quite as relaxing to me than a stroll through an Antique store. I could just meander and look all day long admiring the perfection as well as the imperfection. I'm easy...my taste is eclectic and I like it that way. I mix and match, blending rustic to modern. I would say my style is comfortable, easy, not too fussy or frilly, but definitely not bland. I have so many interests that I can't leave anything out! Hence the cupids, a little frou frou, but it just so happens that they look wonderful in my studio which is Shabby Cute! Not that everything needs a purpose but these little sweeties will be the keepers of my most cherished buttons.

We Made It!

It was surreal not being able to see out of the windows...creepy really...Here's a picture to show you how it was here for 2 days...Now this looks like frosted glass-it is not! It's clear glass with about an inch of ice on it!

Freeway's NOT Happy!

Here we go again, another weather event here in Iowa. This time--An Ice Storm! We are told to expect 1/2" of ice today on the roads, in the trees, and on the power lines! We are to expect power outages...I am getting quilts and comforters ready!

I woke up this morning thinking about those poor people in Haiti, what devastation, the plight of humanity. My heart soars every time the rescuers bring out another person who is alive, but great sadness envelopes me when I hear the number of dead, and wounded.

I was contacted by a great friend Sheila Dee from My Creative Side who was one of the volunteer quilters of America's 9-11 Memorial Quilts that made remembrance quilts for FDNY, EMS, Flight 93, The Pentagon, Port Authority, Port Authority Staff, And The Victims. This group of wonderful ladies from all over the country are joining together once again, assisting the "Joshua Reiss Memorial Foundation (9-11 victim) on a project to collect quilts for Haiti's Children, most of whom were left with nothing. Many, many lost their parents. (Please click on the links for the story). These colorful & comforting quilts will be given to the children and the hospitals in Haiti.
Anyone can volunteer to create a quilt for a child either by hand or machine quilting. I am making a rag quilt for a teen girl. Baby quilts, toddler quilts, any size for boys or girls are needed. Jeannie Ammermann is the founder of the 9-11 Memorial Quilts and if you would care to donate a new handcrafted quilt you may contact her through the America's 9-11 Memorial Quilts link above.
The pictures I'm posting today are actually photo's I took yesterday of the hoar frost on the trees. Isn't it spectacular?? Winter Wonderland is a fitting title, don't you think? But today will be a different story I'm afraid....Lord help us!

The Last Semester Has Begun! Whoo-Hoo!!

Hi Ya'll!! I haven't been around much lately although I have been stopping by your blogs and taking a peek at what's going on with you. Monday began my last semester, and I only needed two classes. A computer course, and a health and wellness course. I thought the computer class would be a Breeze since I have been using one for so many years... and the applications are not difficult...just a bit tedious...I'm not thrilled with minute details..drives me up a wall. But I AM good at looking at the overall picture, and the overall picture tells me the end is in sight!
We had a little snow melt this week, which allowed me to take Freeway out to play. Walking in 12 inches of snow is ROUGH! But the doggy is happy, and the birds are fed.
I am beginning to plan for spring already...it's a matter of survival really, and I have some great ideas for flowers and greenery for the front of the house. I may even plant a vegetable garden this year!
So, off to study (I like to get ahead a little bit) and watch the freezing rain come down. I miss you all, and will be back here as I am able. Hugs!!!

Right....I know I'm a little late...but Happy New Year Friends! I haven't posted in quite some time, things have been a little crazy around here. First off, thank you ever so much for all of your prayers for my sweetheart. He did real well in 16" inches of snow...only got stuck twice! But he is safe and we are fine. Two days after my mom arrived, she had a severe asthma attack, and I had to call 911. They sent an ambulance and took her to the hospital straightaway. By the time I arrived (had to drive slowly-very slowly) they had her breathing much better and in a few hours released her. She is only now beginning to breath normally. She has what is called athletic asthma? She had one episode of this kind in the 80's, but other than that, she has no symptoms at all. Isn't that strange?

As she was on the mend from the asthma, we both got dreadful colds!! Honestly!!!!

Anyway, we are both doing well now, and each of us are happy to have that mess over with before the new year.

You prayers have been so effective...my husband didn't even catch a COLD!!! He was well protected~~thank you all!

The day began at -25 degrees...this afternoon it is 1 degree. We are in a deep freeze.

I just had to get out and get the birdies some nourishment, as it has been too icy to walk on the snow here. So here are the pretty little birds, happy to have some munchies!

Hello friends, no pictures today...just a request for prayer for my dear, sweet husband. It is forcasted to be a wicked storm to come our way this week, and my hubby will be on call, in charge of several hundred miles of track here in Iowa. Ice, snow, and blizzard will blast us and he will be called out in the middle of the night as he usually is during these bad storms. Please pray for his safety, and pray that he will be able to get some rest inbetween his work. So many of his fellow co-workers have scheduled vacations to spend time with their families, (and that's good), but my darling will be out there, driving from one problem area to another. So please, during this Christmas Holiday won't you remember him? Thank you so much all of you, I just know that you will. Blessings~

Merry Christmas Friends~Haven't posted in awhile, busy, busy getting ready for my mom to arrive from Texas for Christmas! Sheeeee's Heeere!! Of course first thing she did was hop up into the skid steer with her grand-dog following closely behind! I hope that I am as spry and energetic as my mom when I am her age!!(81) Heck....I hope I MAKE it to her age!! Just look at her beautiful smile!! Isn't it Grand? ~Finding Joy in a Morning Ritual~

Here's the gang from the hilltop hood greeting Freeway this morning! The Australian Shepherd's' live across the street and come by every morning and sit on the front porch waiting...and waiting...and waiting until I let Freeway out. They greet each other.......

This is the puppy "Tracy" that was born right after we moved in.
There were 8 puppies in the litter. They kept this little girl for their youngest son. Boy is she a cutie!!

Can you tell that Casey is relaxed?? A morning nap in 2 degrees. Poor Freeway on the other hand gets cold and picks her feet up if she's out too long!

There goes Tracy after Freeway (not shown to the left of the picture) Freeway's not too sure about Tracy, as the pup always wants to kiss her face, and jump all over her. Freeway shows teeth..."Grr..get away kid, I'm busy!" And Tracy does...for a minute. Just like a puppy with an attention span of a gnat!
All of our doggy's wait patiently for the mailman, the trash man, and the UPS guy, each of which carries a big bag of cookies in their vehicles! It's pure joy when a delivery truck starts up the hill!! There is dancing in the street!! AND they follow the trucks from house to house!! It's a SMORGASBORD!!
That's why I love dogs....

~The Worst Storm In 10 Years!!!

Hi Hi!!! Well, I have internet service now!! It's been intermittent since the storm. Holy Moses it has been quite a few days here. Hubby was coming up the hill to our home, and got his work truck stuck on the cliff side of the road. Whew!! Thank the Lord he didn't go over! Then, he walked the rest of the way up (in a blizzard, a whiteout) and got in the skid steer to retrieve the truck, and the skid steer got stuck in the 3 feet of snow in the driveway. So we dug out the skid steer and got it going! I shoveled and Mikey plowed. Two hours later we got the driveway cleaned. My wonderful husband was able to plow the snow away from the work truck and drive it home...then he walked back for the skid steer. He ended up cleaning the whole road, just so he could get out in the morning! The highway that our road is off of, was closed, and because of the whiteout, they weren't running the snow plows. It was a mess!! Truly as mess! I've been in the Midwest now for 13 years and I've never seen anything like it!! Madness!! I took a few pictures of the front and back yards, although it is difficult to see how tall the snow is. We had 4ft. drifts in the driveway... My neighbor's doggies are running towards me, so maybe you can get the perspective. Big Snow!! Also, Here's the wreath, it's not a good picture, but since the internet was back up I thought I'd hurry and post. So quickly quickly I am taking pictures and typing!!! Gotta go before I lose it!! Hugs everyone, I'll be back to visit all of your blogs when I can get service!!!! Whoo Hoo! Get out the sled!!! Blessings~

Well friends...it's coming! The first big snow of the year! The weather station is calling for 7" to 12" of snow...Wow! One weekend when we lived in Illinois, we had 26" of snow!! So...I'm thinking that we can handle this...We got just a skiff last night 1 or 2 inches..it's so pretty! I welcome the winter with the first snowfall...Not bad for a California girl!!!

Yesterday, my sweet partner and I chopped an old Oak tree down for our neighbor, we kiddingly call him the professor. (as in Gilligans Island??) The professor has a garage full of inventions, most of which are not Exactly in working order....nonetheless, a great idea~ It's so fun to look at his things that he has put together with old parts of something else, a little glue, and alot of FREE time! You see, the professor is retired...

Anyway he was so kind to help us sheet rock the garage, so my sweetie pie wanted to do something for him. He had this old oak tree that was rotted and half eaten by creatures, and he needed it cut down. So we did that yesterday! We worked from 7:30am to 2:30 in
the afternoon on this tree. BUT...we got it done~ He'll have lots of firewood this year. My husband was raised a mountain man and has been cutting trees for years and years. I, on the other hand am relatively new to this outdoorsy working girl life. But it's wonderful..I am blessed.

As we were laying in bed last night Hubby asked me if I thought we were getting too old for this kind of thing....I told him No..But truly, we had a really hard time to get up and out of bed this morning. Both of us were doing alot of Ohhhh's and Oowwwws!!

I understand that you might think this is a LITTLE boring, (a lot materialistic) but I am just a simple girl, and I love my new coffee pot! I call it "The Unit." It slices, It dices (not really)....remember that old commercial?? There I go again.....

Back to the unit...(I am not a coffee addict...I am not a coffee addict)

Okay, I am a coffee addict. I love coffee, I love to smell it grinding and brewing, it evokes memories of walking into Dunkin' Doughnuts (another era). Ahhhhh the aroma--coffee, doughnuts, coffee, doughnuts...doughnuts...doughnuts....you get the picture.

This "made for me" coffee pot grinds the beans, steams the coffee perfectly, adjusts the strength and body of the finished product....AND it does it all as I am laying in my warm cozy bed!! Oh the genius that thought of this! I could hug her/him!!!

It doesn't take much to make me smile!!

And I can't remember the last time I had a doughnut!

And I can't remember the last time I was in a Dunkin' Doughnuts!

And I'm just a simple gal.

I may be a little weird here....but often times I ponder the differences between men and women. Do you ever do that? Take for instance last night...I am bringing the dog in from subzero temperatures, my nose frozen and burning, and underneath my 10 lb. winter coat I'm soaking wet from a hot flash! My hubby walks around the corner sporting a, "dire look" on his face. He says very seriously, "Honey, we're out of toilet paper...put it on your list." In my present state of menopause, with the hot flashes, mood swings, memory issues and facial hair, I naturally assume that I may have forgotten the toilet paper at the store. But then I remember just this week picking up a huge package at the store. "Aahhh yes, I remember it well." So I investigated....this is what I found!

I patiently explain to my ever-lovin' that there is more "toilet paper in this house than we would need in a year!" Yes yes, he knows all about that. But the SUPPLY closet is empty!! Uh yes...the supply closet.....

The good thing is that he tells me these things...the bad thing is that he tells me these things.

I look forward each year to decorating for Christmas, and I love the holiday feel in my home. I welcome each item as it is removed from the box, where its been carefully stored over the year. Every piece holds a sweet memory of a time, a place and a person. I delight in the memories of people and places that have colored my life with the Spirit of Christmas. I have decided to share some of those memories and people in a few posts during this holiday season.

I treasure Christmas tree ornaments, and the most special and spectacular ornaments are the ones that my mom made in the 1970's & 1980's. They are each so beautiful and so unique! What a joy to see her creative spirit in every bead and bauble. Every one is a labor of love. Aren't they fabulous? The remind me of miniature Faberge eggs! My mom has an eye for beauty...and she is beautiful!

On this day before Thanksgiving, I continued with a list that I began some time ago. A list of all of the good things for which I am grateful. Then it occurred to me, that it is easy to be thankful for the wonderful things that have happened throughout the year, but much harder to rejoice in the difficult things that have come my way. The trials that have strengthened me, situations that have lent to character building, and most importantly, compassion for others. These too, are a part of life to be thankful for, an integral piece of who I am. So...this Thankful day, I will take joy in the happy times as well as the sorrowful moments, knowing that the sorrow will lead me through the pathway of perseverance. "And We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

First, I would like to thank everyone so much for your help with my wreath...You have given me some excellent ideas that are pulling me out of the quicksand of indecision and design-block!
And from my heart I thank you for taking your time to help! I will post the finished product soon.
Now onto breakfast...this is what I had..yes, pumpkin pie and whipped cream for breakfast! Who does this?? If I were NOT on a DIET, I would NOT be having pumpkin pie and whipped cream for breakfast!! It's a Crazy mind game I tell you! But (I told myself) it IS a VEGETABLE!! Geesh!! I think I'm losing it!!!

I have been working on this wreath, I found these marvelous flowers a few years ago in a shop in Illinois. I have been trying to make a wreath that would be as spectacular as the flowers....and I am stumped! Help me Rhonda!! You know, how you know that something"s not right? Some thing is missing, or perhaps the balance is not right...but I am just blank. Then I got the best idea! I'll ask my blogging friends, because of course you are the most talented people I have ever met. So, what does it need? A bow? Something....Hmmmmm! Thank you so much!

Welcome to Marshalltown Antiques! This is Monica, the lady who runs this enormous Store! In addition to being able to take you to exactly what you are looking for..she is a wealth of information about the history of Marshalltown and just the Sweetest Lady! (The ruby glass pitcher, and king size chenille bedspread are my treasures!) Notice the tin tiles cascading down the walls of the staircase.

This is a picture of the ceiling-notice the tin tiles! The tiles cover the ceiling and then extend about 4 feet down the sides of the walls. Beautiful! The building is 111 years old. It was a merchantile store.

Pretty hanging lamps were everywhere! This is the kind of shop that you have to look up down and sideways to take in everything...it's pretty near impossible to see it all at one single visit.

There were linens for days!! Boxes and boxes and rows upon rows, of Beautiful linens, lace and feedsacks.

This is but ONE of the many salt & pepper cabinets. Cute Cute!!

This antique store is inside of a huge building that is a block long. It has 5 Stories. Only 2 stories are antiques though...but that's enough! It would take hours to see everything!

Beautiful Cabinet-there are two of these matching! Can you see the carved angels on top? The only difference between them are the poses of the angels on top. (the other one is to the right)

I had such fun in this wonderful store...didn't even see half of it and I spent 3 hours there! Everything in the store is on consignment, down to the smallest item. I was fascinated that they could keep track of every item like that! My head was spinning like a top contemplating the paperwork involved!

As I prepare for the Holidays, my studio is awash with fabrics, patterns, and a sea magazine clippings of beautiful things that I have painstakingly chosen to re-create for my family and friends for Christmas gifts. I've gotten my grocery lists completed, and my Christmas card list laying out ready to go. The cards of course, were purchased last year at the after Christmas sale. I do this each year, and each year I am so happy with the results, but not necessarily the means in which I chose to take to get the results. See....I'm a bit of a perfectionist...need I say more?? It drives me CrAzY!!

Today I was reading my morning devotional which teaches me new things as well as reminding me of other things I have forgotten. As my brain chooses to suck in and hold trivia like a Hoover Vacuum cleaner, you can clearly see why a Daily devotional is perfect for me. Back to perfection...I read this today and thought I would share it with you. It is from "Soul Retreats for Women."

"Do I strive for perfection in my life?" Perhaps you don't strive for perfection all the time, but are there some areas of your life where you feel that you are not quite good enough? Where you just don't measure up to what you "should" be? Do you keep trying harder to be a better woman but your efforts never seem to be good enough? Does it seem that somebody keeps moving the mark on the measuring stick a few notches higher? (Now...who could that be?)

Striving for perfection is an impossible quest; perfection is a myth and forever out of reach. Aim for excellence, instead. Excellence has nothing to do with outward appearances or with what you accomplish or with what you possess. Excellence depends solely on what you are from God's perspective-and God doesn't focus on your flaws.

When you seek God's ideal, you will throw away your measuring stick. You don't need one that marks success and quality of life by the world's standards. Christ requires only simplicity of heart."

Yes, I know this is a weird combo here! But I couldn't wait to show you the new pillow I made....and I couldn't resist this photo of the harvested cornfield! I just love it! Since I am a geometrically challenged person....this field really appeals to me. I am attracted to the bumpy, wavy, straightness (is that a word?) of it. As I watched the farmer go up, then down, then up, down again...I secretly wondered if he took sea sick pills before he began. As for me....well I found myself hanging on to the porch rail for support!! Have a Wonderful Weekend!!

Good Morning!~It's a lovely day here in Iowa~the farmer's continue to rush to get the corn in as the weather has delayed harvest this year. God Bless them, as they are working day and night. My husbands' family originally settled in Minnesota, and have farmed there for generations. They are good and honest salt of the earth folks who rely on God and common sense for their daily bread. My hubby and I just love getting together with them. I received this cute joke the other day.....just had to share it with you!

Ole's car was hit by a truck in an accident. In court, the trucking company's lawyer was questioning Ole.

"Didn't you say, sir, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm Fine,?' asked the lawyer.

Ole responded, "Vell, I'll tell you vat happened. I had yust loaded my favorite mule, Bessie, into da...."

"I didn't ask you any details" the lawyer interrupted. "Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, "I'm fine?"

Ole said, :Vell, I had yust got Bessie into da trailer and I vas driving down the road...."

The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question."

By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Ole's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule, Bessie."

Ole thanked the Judge and proceeded. "Vell, as I vas saying, I had yust loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into da trailer and vas driving her down da higvay ven dis huge semi-truck and trailer ran da stop sign and smacked my truck right in da side. I vas trown into one ditch and Bessie vas trown into da other. I vas hurting real bad and didn't vant to move. However, I could hear Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape yust by her groans. Shortly after da accident da Higheay Patrolman, he came to da scene...He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he vent over to her...

"After he looked at her and saw her fatal condition he took out his gun and shot her right 'tween da eyes.

Den da Patrolman, he came across da road, gun still smoking, looked at me and said, "How are you feeling?"

"Now vat DA heck vould YOU say?"

~It's A Harvest Moon!~The Farmers Are Working!

Did you see that moon last night? Oh my goodness but it was spectacular! A harvest moon! The farmers here are working on the cornfields now having already combined the beans. They work from sun up to sun down! They are getting closer to my house!! Our house is situated right smack dab on top of a hill, the back-back yard borders up against a cornfield. During the late fall and through winter and spring, the view from the back is far reaching and just beautiful! But in the summer, we are afforded a bit more privacy with the tall corn stalks. I love the change, and the view...and the corn. We have deer in our yard often-they like the corn too! Many times as I drive down the hill, I have to stop the truck and let the deer pass. How beautiful they are! I enjoy the fawns with their big eyes and white spots. I have my camera ready to snap some photos...I keep missing them..darn! My husband calls me the "deer stalker" as I am forever trying to get photos of them!! They're slippery though--one false move and they're gone like a shot! I am not the most graceful gal anyway....in my haste to "capture the moment" I usually trip over the rugs, or spill the dog's water...It's not easy being a paparazzi!! Happy Monday!

I was up early this morning before the sun came up waiting patiently for yet another glorious sunrise to share with you..well, I got busy with morning chores and missed the red sky as the sun rose. I got to the back porch just as the clouds opened up just a bit, allowing the sun to shine through. What beautiful color! Instead of reds and oranges...blues, and purples, pinks and yellows. Stunning!
Look at the branches of the little tree, all barren and ready for winter! A few tiny leaves hanging on, not ready to go, waiting for a gust of wind to send them on their journey into the fields beyond. Yesterday was a very windy day, and the leaves from the trees were thick and blowing in swirls then up into the sky, they seem to be saying, "See ya next year!"
Time to get out the ol' rake and mower for the last time this year, and in their place, the shovel and snow blower....I feel like the tiny leaves left on the tree..I know it's comin' and I'll be ready, but I'm just not ready to let go!
